Lecture – Ruth Bothwell & the Restoration of the Grand Opera House
10th November 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
$7.50 – $10.00Join UAH for our first lecture back in the Old Museum Building on Wednesday 10th November.
The Grand Opera House is the jewel in the catalogue of Frank Matcham theatres dotted across the UK. Built in 1895, the stage has seen the biggest names in theatre, such as Charlie Chaplin, Luciano Pavarotti and Laurel & Hardy. It was approaching the 50th anniversary of the last major restoration works when it was decided that a major overhaul of the auditorium was required. Ruth Bothwell, senior conservator and founder of Decowell, was consulted to provide a survey and condition report; it became apparent that imminent work was required to ensure the lasting legacy of the magnificent theatre.
Ruth and her team battled lockdowns, lead paint and kilos of dust to magnificently restore the auditorium in all its glory. Her fascinating lecture will provide insights into the process, the challenges faced with such a mammoth task and the hidden past of the building which lay undiscovered for 50 years.
The lecture will take place in the Old Museum Building on Wednesday 10th November at 7pm. Tickets will be available to attend the lecture in-person. Tickets are also available to livestream the lecture online, and the video will be available to watch for up to a week after the event.
Tickets are £10 non-members / £7.50 for members.
