Climate Change and the Historic Environment: A view from Scotland

Join UAH for a special guest lecture on the issue of Climate Change with Dr. Ewan Hyslop from Historic Environment Scotland. As our climate changes this has implications for our historic environment. Anecdotal evidence already suggests that historic buildings that were once water tight are now becoming damp. Such change  has implications not only for historic collections, but the future of our historic buildings and the environments they are set in. How do we respond to this? Dr. Hyslop will discuss Scotland’s approach to climate change and what mitigation action they will be embarking on to ensure the sustainability of their properties.

The Lecture will finish at 8pm followed by drinks.

Ewan Hyslop

Dr Ewan Hyslop is Head of Technical Research and Science at Historic Environment Scotland, where he manages programmes on technical conservation research, digital research and innovation, heritage science services, and the agency’s climate change programme. His primary role is to coordinate collaborative research programmes and to ensure the application of research to improve conservation decision-making; both for properties and sites in the care of the state, and to the wider historic environment in Scotland.

 Ewan has degrees in geology and geochemistry, and an MSc in Architectural Conservation. He joined Historic Scotland in 2010 having been manager for building stone research and consultancy with the British Geological Survey, specialising in the analysis, selection and performance of building stone. Ewan sits on the steering groups for the Sustainable Scotland Network and Adaptation Scotland, is a Trustee of the UK National Heritage Science Forum, and External Examiner in Collections Care and Conservation Practice at University of Cardiff. Ewan lectures widely to a range of audiences, with particular focus on heritage climate change and stone conservation.
