Restoration & Renewal: Revitalising our Townscape Heritage

In partnership with Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council

Posted on: 1st November 2022

Over the past few months, Ulster Architectural Heritage was delighted to work with Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council to deliver a series of events surrounding the Restoration and Renewal: Revitalising our Townscape Heritage. In association with Armagh and Lurgan Townscape Heritage Schemes, kindly supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and ABC Borough Council, UAH delivered two events as part of this series, one in Armagh and one in Lurgan. It was pleasing to see a variety of participants ranging from homeowners, architects, heritage professionals and enthusiastic members of the public.

Internal Maintenance

On Thursday 25th August 2022, UAH travelled to The Palace Demesne, Armagh, for an event on the internal maintenance of historic buildings. On the day we heard from John Butler, a listed building owner, on living in a historic building and Johnathon Todd, Architect at BMA Architects, on working on listed buildings. The event culminated with a walking tour of the Conservation Area, led by UAH Heritage at Risk Officer, Sebastian Graham. Participants were also lucky enough to visit several buildings that have benefitted from the Armagh Townscape Heritage Scheme including the Armagh County Club and the recently reconstructed 43 Upper English Street.

Shopfronts and Signage

The second event in this series took place on Thursday 13th October in Brownlow House, Lurgan. This event focused on historic shopfronts and signage. Presentations and demonstrations were facilitated by John Byrne of Signability and Johnathon Black of J.B. Heritage Joinery. Presentations were finished off by Ciara Young from Consarc Design who talked us through the Armagh Shutter Removal Scheme, factoring in elements of signwriting and heritage joinery. The day culminated in a walking tour of the Lurgan Conservation Area by UAH Heritage at Risk Officer, Sebastian Graham.

UAH would like to thank Armagh and Lurgan Townscape Heritage Scheme for enabling us to host these events and Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund for making it possible.
