Linen Biennale 2023 and Newry StoryMaps

Posted on: 3rd August 2023

Despite the dull and wet weather UAH have been busy behind the scenes with the Hands on Heritage and Heritage at Risk projects. Check out more details on https://www.handsonheritage-ni.org.uk/ .

Newry Three Architects

Over the last month we delivered a talk on the importance of Duff, Barre and Watson on the architecture in the city of Newry as well as highlighting features of buildings. This was followed by a walking tour highlighting the key sites. The aim of this session was to highlight the architecture of the city to tour guides and students. Despite the rather fractured nature of the city it retains a number of key buildings with a rich maritime and industrial history.

There were 20 people in attendance and we hope that they can bring tourists to explore the city and beautiful surrounding area. Many thanks to Newry, Mourne and Down Council for facilitating the event. Linen Biennale 2023

We have teamed up with Linen Biennale to create a story map of the key textile mills and factories on the Heritage at Risk Register throughout Northern Ireland. It provides a history of each site and the latest news about their current fate. These are some of our most important buildings and finding a new use for them can be challenging but extremely rewarding. The story map also looks at the restored examples around Northern Ireland which can offer some light into how they can be reused. Heritage at Risk officer, Sebastian Graham will provide a talk on these at risk structures throughout NI on Friday 11th August – https://www.linenbiennalenorthernireland.com/events-1/mills-at-risk
