LECTURE – Heritage at Risk in Northern Ireland – An Overview

26th October 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

£7.50 – £10.00

There are over 762 buildings on the Heritage at Risk Register across Northern Ireland. They range from small vernacular dwellings to grand Big Houses, Banks and Gaols. The primary aims of the HARNI project are to record architecturally and historically important buildings that appear to be at risk, and act as a catalyst for conservation and re-use of built heritage at risk. It also serves to inform wider heritage policy and identify issues affecting heritage, which need to be addressed and prioritised.

The Heritage at Risk Officer, Sebastian Graham will explore some of the threats to our built heritage highlighting notable examples across the country. He will also show that buildings on the register have the potential to be fully reused with case studies to prove this.

Sebastian Graham, Heritage At Risk Officer

Sebastian graduated from Ulster University with a BA (Hons) 2.1 in History, a postgraduate diploma in Environmental Management and more recently an MA in History in 2019. Sebastian’s particular interest is in the field of industrial archaeology and has developed an online resource exploring over 4000 mill sites across Northern Ireland. Sebastian has previously worked for the National Trust and Libraries NI and established a reminiscence group sharing memories of different buildings around Cookstown.

As Heritage project officer for the Heritage at Risk project Sebastian works in partnership with the Department for Communities: Historic Environment Division to identify and record buildings at risk while acting as a catalyst to find solutions for their reuse.
