RECORDED LECTURE on WJ Barre, 1830-1867: A Vigorous Mind

This lecture was delivered on Thursday 19th May 2022 at 28 Bedford Street, Belfast.

UAH Chief Executive and author of W. J. Barre 1830-1867: A Vigorous Mind, Dr Paul Harron, presented this illustrated lecture on the life and works of this great architect in one of his most important surviving buildings in Belfast. Newry-born Barre is one of Ireland’s most prolific architects, despite his relatively short life. His most iconic buildings include Newry Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church, The former Provincial Bank at 2 Royal Avenue, Belfast, as well as the Ulster Hall. The lecture details a chronology of buildings and discusses his unique style. The Former Linen Warehouse built for William Girdwood, Belfast (1865) at 28 Bedford Street, until recently known as Bryson House and adjacent to the Ulster Hall, has been closed to the public for a number of years. The warehouse has recently been purchased by the Royal Irish Regiment who intend to fully restore the building as their museum, café and regimental offices.
