This book describes a group of extraordinary schools built in the mid-19th Century as role models for the new system of National Education. They provided not only exemplary teaching practices , but also residential teacher training and facilities for scientific, vocational, agricultural and adult education.

Plans and views of every building in Ulster are included. Of special interest are original interior perspectives of the schoolrooms, furniture and equipment, which complement detailed descriptions of schooling 150 years ago.
