This is a collection of three unbound printed short articles written for Country Life Magazine in 1971, 1980 & 1983.

The articles are as follows:

Ulster’s Architectural Identity by Alistair Rowan, 1971

This article covers the plight facing historic architecture at the time the article was written, before statutory protection in the form of listing existed for historic buildings, and before the introduction of conservation areas. This article is a reminder of how far Ulster has come in the protection of historic structures, and also gives an overview of the Society’s actions in its early years. 3pp, black and white photographs.

The Grand Opera House, Belfast, Restored by C.E.B. Brett, 1980

This article gives a short overview of the history of the Grand Opera House before its closure, and then discusses the subsequent efforts to get the building restored after its closure following bomb damage, in 1972. The article also discusses the works undertaken during the restoration, with interesting commentary and black and white and colour photographs. 3pp.

A Perfect Victorian Suburb by Alistair Rowan, 1983

This article discusses the changing face of the Queen’s University Area at the time of writing; including successes and failings of additions and restorations on the University Road. The article also mentions the 1980s scheme to restore the Lynn Library; which recently underwent a new scheme of restoration. 3pp, black and white photographs.

This is an interesting collection of articles which together give a picture of the changing attitudes to building restoration and conservation in Ulster in the 1970s to 1980s.
