‘The Language of Architectural Classicism: From Looking to Seeing’

Posted on: 19th February 2025

Vice-President of the Society, Dr. Edward McParland gave our February lecture. Based on his recently published book, The Language of Architectural Classicism, Dr. McParland’s excellent talk explained the different ways in which architects have interpreted the various elements of the classical canon over the centuries.

Illustrated by an impressive selection of drawings and photographs, many from Belfast, the presentation demonstrated the difficulties that classical architects have encountered in borrowing from, or departing from, the rules of classical architecture and showed the different approaches taken to solve these conundrums.

Our thanks to Dr. McParland for his excellent, and very humorous, lecture. It was a fascinating talk from which we all learnt so much.
