Ulster Architectural Heritage is delighted to announce that applications are now open to become one of the 6 groups/individuals to develop your capacity, confidence and heritage skills through the Hands-On Heritage NI project, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Do you worry about the devastating decline and loss of built heritage in your area? Or are you particularly concerned about a select number of buildings? Why not assist UAH in responding to the needs of your built heritage.
UAH is recruiting 6 voluntary groups or individuals to help devise Local lists, focussing on a specific town or village in NI, to better connect people and communities with their built heritage!
UAH want to equip you with the tools necessary to engage with and protect your built heritage. Our 6 groups will learn how to utilise our ‘How To?’ Guides, Online Toolkit, Recording & Reporting App and the In Your Area Webpage.
In a relaxed and friendly environment, you or your group will have the opportunity to participate in a series of workshops, hosted by UAH and special guests, developing your skills and confidence in reading, recording and researching built heritage in your area.
Workshops will be designed for our 6 selected groups/individuals to learn new and/or enhance existing skills. An array of activities will take place (dependent on COVID 19 regulations) with a mixture of online and physical workshops.
UAH will also be offering the opportunity to ‘train the trainer’ to help you confidently up skill your group, organisation or others in reading, recording and reporting buildings. We want to inspire and prepare you or your group for future activities, whether this be a continuation of devising local lists, recording and reporting heritage or heritage project planning.

About the Hands-On Heritage Project
The Hands-On Heritage Project, is a 3 year project which aims to transform the way people and communities engage with the built heritage in Northern Ireland. For the first time, individuals, groups and whole communities will be able to record their local historic built environment on a free, easily accessible and bespoke digital platform. As this facilitates the development of the wider record of historic assets, and their condition, across Northern Ireland. It will also enable communities to establish what is important to them about the historic built environment that defines their ‘sense of place’ and make the case to ensure that this is maintained and where the opportunity arises, regenerated for the benefit of the community. It will also allow the public to share a wealth of material, including photographs, oral histories and written stories or folklore associated with a building or place in turn helping communities to establish what is important to them and worth preserving.
The project puts more power in the hands of people and communities who benefit from, and interact with, their local built heritage day to day; allowing them to take the lead in heritage related activities: highlighting, protecting, conserving and regenerating heritage.
