Richhill Building Preservation Trust: Regeneration of Richhill

Richhill Building Preservation Trust was established in 2004 and has endeavoured to conserve and enhance the built heritage of the village since its inception. The trust commissioned a strategic development plan to guide their approach, which included an extensive consultation with all stakeholders, such as residents and local businesses. This led to the trust successfully applying for a Townscape Heritage Initiative scheme for Richhill Village Conservation Area. The THI commenced following the securing of match funding through a number of contributors.

Through the THI, RBPT was able to facilitate the restoration of eleven buildings, five of which were listed, and one of which was on the Buildings at Risk Register. The works undertaken on each property were unique; however they all had the common outcome of conserving and enhancing the streetscape. Works included reinstating sash windows and cast iron rainwater goods, re-rendering and re-painting facades in more appropriate colour schemes and making signage more in-keeping with the conservation area. Structural changes were also made to improve the condition, functionality, and the appearance of certain buildings in order to restore character which had been lost through previous interventions.

This project has succeeded in improving the appearance of Richhill Village Conservation Area, and the scheme has enabled a new business to open. RBPT has rejuvenated redundant spaces across the eleven properties to offer additional residential units or office space. RBPT have achieved a huge amount through working with both individuals and groups, promoting pride in the local area which will continue to have a positive impact on Richhill and benefit the local community.
