Online Tour: People’s Parks – Memories & New Visions

24th March 2023 - 21st April 2023

Have you ever considered what Belfast’s historic Parks & Gardens once looked like when they first opened to members of the public? Many Parks & Gardens, upon opening, were well equipped with an array of recreational and leisure facilities including bowling greens, tennis courts, drinking fountains, ice houses, bandstands and swimming pools. These additions were once part of redevelopment initiatives for the parks to attract more visitors, or in some cases, paid for by public subscription and/or donated by certain benefactors.

Today, much of this built heritage has been lost over time, for a number of different reasons including public safety, redevelopment plans and vandalism. With each item lost, the historic parks and gardens lose a part of their charm.

Why not take a look at our online tour, highlighting items of ‘lost’ built heritage within a select number of Belfast’s historic parks and gardens. Please note that the list is not exhaustive.
