12th September 2020 @ 10:00 am - 26th August 2021 @ 5:00 pm
Join UAH, supported by Belfast City Council, for a FREE online tour of Belfast’s Donegall Place.
Each year for European Heritage Open Days, Open Heritage promotes understanding and access to built heritage in Belfast. This year Open Heritage goes online! The first of our online guided tours will allow you to see the fascinating history of buildings of Donegall Place, either on the ground with your mobile device, or remotely – even from the comfort of your home!
Donegall Place, grandiloquently bookended by City Hall is one of Belfast’s most iconic streets. Laid out in the eighteenth century as Linen Hall Street, it evolved from a place of substantial private houses to encompass commerce, culture and shopping – and more. Above modern shopfronts you can see a simple Georgian terrace right up to the grandest of Victorian department stores, illustrating Belfast’s growth and character.
Take the tour to delve into the past, learn more about buildings that have been lost, the social histories of Belfast entrepreneurs once known internationally, and also celebrate architectural gems that remain. Follow the evolution of the streetscape and spot the quirky adornments – from a fairy-tale castle to the head of a Highland Chief!
No download required. Remember, follow government guidance and take the tour from the comfort of home #StayAtHome #StaySafe.
